Polish intra-EU mobility: Determinants and consequences

This report analyses the determinants and consequences of intra-EU mobility, focusing on one of the largest mobile EU-born groups: Polish migrants. Drawing on detailed case studies in Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain, as well as selected Polish sending regions, the study examines why Polish citizens move, how they integrate and contribute in destination regions, and how mobility shapes social, economic and demographic conditions in places of origin.

The report outlines the multiple motivations driving Polish migration—including labour market opportunities, lifestyle aspirations, family strategies and transnational practices—and investigates both positive outcomes and persistent challenges for migrants and host communities. It also documents the continued importance of transnational ties, social remittances and return migration, as well as barriers that hinder migrants’ participation in local societies.

By examining trajectories across three diverse EU member states, the report offers new comparative insights into how intra-EU mobility unfolds in practice and its impact on regional development in both sending and receiving contexts. These findings support the broader PREMIUM_EU objective of understanding mobility as a key component of demographic and social change in Europe.
