On 20 May, the University of Barcelona hosted the workshop “International Migration and Internal Migrations in Spain”, organised by the research project “Internal migration in the redistribution of the immigrant population in Spain” (CNS2022-135139), in collaboration with the PREMIUM_EU project.
The event provided a comprehensive overview of internal migration trends among various immigrant communities in Spain, with a focus on their migratory processes and territorial distribution. It featured a total of eight presentations and took place at the Faculty of Geography and History, drawing approximately 50 participants.
Osama Damoun presented “The Role of Foreigners in the Population Renewal of Spanish Provinces in the 21st Century”, highlighting the importance of internal migration among foreign-born populations using several population renewal indicators.
Nachatter Singh delivered the presentation “Internal Migrations of the South Asian Population in Spain Before and After the Economic Crisis”, focusing on Pakistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis, and analysing their territorial distribution and migration flows over time.
Jordi Bayona presented “Internal Migrations of Foreigners in Spain: Towards Territorial Concentration or Dispersion?”, showing that internal migration tends to move towards areas with lower concentrations of migrants during periods of growth, and towards areas of higher concentration during times of crisis.
PREMIUM_EU is in its final year with several events, publications and a regional migration policy dashboard to come. Stay on track with project activities and get bite-sized research straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletter from the website home page.
